The Bible In Basic English is a translation of the Bible done with a vocabulary of 1000 words. The translation committee was led by S. H. Hooke, professor emeritus of Old Testament studies at the University of London. Hooke did the majority of the translation directly from the Hebrew and Greek manuscripts. The Bible was completed in 1947 and printed in 1965 by Cambridge Press in England. It was published without a copyright notice and distributed in America, thereby falling immediately into the public domain in the United States according to the UUC convention of that time.

This recording of the Bible in Basic English was made by PublicDomainAudioBibles.com using a licensed high quality text to speech engine and placed into the public domain in 2018. The narration uses a woman's voice with an Indian English accent. It can be used without restriction in the United States. (Read our legal disclaimer)
